Ugly Sweater backlash

Post  steak on Wed Dec 17, 2008 1:33 pm

Rebellion rarely is easy. But I just wanted to say out loud (again) that ugly sweater parties are old, cliche, self-conscious, and have totally jumped the tank. FSX is cooler than imitating what hipsters in Red Hook were doing four years ago, or what college kids in Minnesota are creating facebook pages about. The intended irony is too obvious. Just say no.

As my proof, I simply offer the following lazy trend pieces written by various newspapers, magazines, and blogs. You know that when this many sources identify a trend that it's no longer cool.

There are exactly 4 allowable theme parties:

Black Tie
Box Social
Toga
White Trash (expires 2009)

Hey just jumping in for Jamie for a sec: If Box Socials are cool then you gotta allow Sausage Fests, too

Just to clarify, it is the Canadian interpretation of Box Social that is acceptable.

Somehow I think the "intended irony" is lost on Steak, Master of the Cool. His adamant protesting and petitioning for everyone to follow his hipster example is what's obvious. Too bad that Taylor--who lobbied for the Ugly Sweater Party to begin with--will never be nearly as stylish and trendy as Steak.

Oh, in case anyone's wondering how to follow Steak's "hipster example" here are the crucial ground rules to being a Master of Cool

-Show up every week, finish every race, no matter the weather
-Try not to hurt or embarrass yourself
-Keep a sense of humor even though you come in 37th out of 42 every week
-Be yourself, even if that annoys or bores some people
-Don't tell anyone else how to ride, dismount, remount, drink, dress, cross-dress, hook up, split wood, make pinatas, etc. Let everyone do their own thing.
-Bring more beer than you drink
-Be sure to thank Bill and Beth face-to-face before you leave every week
-Leave before you become a drunk-driving risk
